People will never understand each other unless they begin to share their way of thinking and living practices. We believe that the domain of the Arts is a most effective instrument to start such a process, expressing ideas and feelings in a direct way. Intercultural exchange has proved to be a rich source for a dialogue between cultures and countries, and an adequate way to recognize both confrontational differences and shared experiences.
|
|
Arts Sudan will concentrate on:
|
| 1 |
The development of new networks between artists in Sudan and the Netherlands
|
| 2 |
The development of teaching programs/workshops on the level of Theatre and Music, sharing knowledge and expertise of each other’s Cultures.
|
| 3 |
The development of a Movement/ Dance- curriculum, combining the rich cultural heritage with new dance techniques from the West.
|
| 4 |
The development of a “mental infrastructure”, artistic and intellectual, between the participants by way of roundtables, publications etc. Activities are meant for artists, art-students, and (eventually) staff-members of Art-Institutions etc.

Intercultural Exchange program Sudan-The Netherlands
The program offers an outline for three years, a frame of events that will be repeated every year. A yearly evaluation of the different parts can lead to a reformulation of the events.
This outline contains:
|
| 1 |
Artist-in Residence projects: artists traveling to the other country to study and develop a cooperation with a creative partner. |
| 2 |
Workshops: technical trainings for actors, dancers and musicians cq art-students and arts-management courses. |
| 3 |
Master-classes, artistic trainings for directing, composing, writing. |
| 4 |
Trainee-ships for art-students in Sudan and The Netherlands. |
| 5 |
A roundtable for artists, scholars, journalists on a social/artistic theme to be held in Khartoum or Amsterdam. |
|

The program starts low level and is low budget. This strategy involves the developments of personal contacts working to a more institutional level. In recent debates in The Netherlands it has become clear that this method is the most, and the only, fruitful one. A comparable exchange-program in Egypt points to the same conclusion.
The program is low-budget. Only expenses are paid. We assume that this will attract really interested artists, students and Institutes taking part in the development of the program.
At the end of the three years we expect to have created a firm base for a continuing program and more institutionalized forms of cooperation, which also can produce its own financing/ and more

The program is already well embedded in the Theatre-world in Khartoum. Contacts have developed over two years and are working well. The program is supported by a concrete/ financial/participation of the Sudanese Partners
